Prineville Bike Park (COTA)
[Prineville, OR – July 30, 2015] – An idea that began as a plea for help from area youth for a permanent alternative to their self-built jumps has received a giant boost toward becoming a reality. To add to the generous support already committed by local businesses and citizens the project is receiving a $25,000 grant from The Ford Family Foundation.
This grant is part of a 5-year relationship between Crook County and The Ford Family Foundation. The Prineville Bike Park is just one example of how citizens are working together to create a vital rural community as a result of this relationship.
The relationship began when the Crook County Foundation invited the Ford Institute Leadership Program to Crook County. This is a 5-year program that is based on the belief that vital rural communities develop from a broad base of knowledgeable, skilled and motivated leaders, a diversity of effective organizations and productive collaborations among organizations.
Year 1 kicked off with the first Cohort of the Leadership Development Class. Year 2 offered the Effective Organizations curriculum. Year 3 was the second Cohort of the Leadership Development Class. Year 4 offered the Community Collaborations curriculum. Year 5 will begin this fall with the third Cohort of the Leadership Development Class. Each of these sessions brought Crook County and Prineville citizens representing various organizations together to gain skills and knowledge and create new relationships they could in turn take back into the community. Tangible evidence of these relationships can already be seen in Crook County – the benches (the first Cohort’s project) and the bike racks (the second Cohort’s project). Soon the Prineville Bike Park will be added to this list.
On July 30th, County Commissioner Seth Crawford hosted a site visit from The Ford Family Foundation. In addition to seeing the site of the Prineville Bike Park, they visited with James Good at Good Bike Co., stopped at the Bowman Museum to learn more about the Scenic Bike Way, explored the Lower 66 Trail System, and sampled the wares of CROP (Crooked River Open Pastures) participants Smudgi Goose Farm, Windy Acres Farm and Wine Down Ranch. Interspersed was lunch at Barney Prines, dinner at Ochoco Brewing and of course some entertainment at the Country Music Festival.
Other financial donors to the Bike Park project include: Facebook Prineville Data Center, COTA, REI, Crooked Tails Veterinary Clinic, Prineville Kiwanis Club, Mann-Crawford Community Foundation, Crook County Rotary Club, and the participants of the Community Forum in October, the Root Beer Ride and Movie event in December, Peak to Creek movie night in February and the bike skills clinic in March.

The Ford Family Foundation was established in 1957 by Kenneth W. and Hallie E. Ford. Its mission is “successful citizens and vital rural communities” in Oregon and Siskiyou County, California. The Foundation is located in Roseburg, Oregon, with a Scholarship office in Eugene.

The COTA Crook County Chapter is collaborating with Crook County Parks and Recreation District (CCPRD) on this project. COTA will lead the fundraising, design and build efforts and CCPRD will participate in the design and oversee the ongoing maintenance and upkeep.
Fundraising is now underway. Donations can be made either via US mail (make checks payable to COTA) or electronically. Please indicate on your check or electronic donation that the money is intended for the Prineville Bike Park.
