The City was first platted in 1877, named in honor of Frances "Barney" Prine. The City of Prineville,
with a population of approximately 8,000 includes young working families and those who chose this area
for their retirement home.
Prineville is located in a region of high desert. At first the countryside might look dry and desolate.
A closer look, however, finds golf courses, fishing opportunities, tall timbered forests, a busy community
and happy people. Every year, while surrounding areas suffer under a heavy blanket of snow, Prineville
usually has just enough of the white stuff to make the hillsides glow. When someone brags that Prineville
has 300 days of sunshine, it might only be a boast but with an average of less than 12 inches of rainfall
per year, it isn't far off.

Two reservoirs supply water for farms producing a wide variety of produce and ranches growing some
of the best cattle in the west. Those same two bodies of water are also a favorite for fisherman,
water-skiers and those enjoying other water sports. Bike trails and numerous parks and green ways
make Prineville an outdoor city from the earliest days of spring until late in the fall. It's not
that uncommon to see people with a boat or a four-wheel off-road vehicle. This is an area for outdoor
fun and recreation. We are truly the"Best of Town & Country".
